I have received some e-mails from a friend and they have attachments, I want to check them for viruses before I open them because they have been forwarded from way down the line.

If you are receiving them through a Yahoo Mail account, Yahoo will already have checked them for viruses. However, YOU should still have an up-to-date anti-virus program running on your computer at all times, and it should be one that checks your emails as well. (For anyone to be on the internet without anti-virus and anti-spyware software running is incredibly foolish.)
