i feel quite the opposite, i think the people who blindly run any old attachment in their email should be shot - 99% of viruses only exist because most people don't have common sense when online.

very few modern viruses have the ability to spread without some naive computer user running something before checking it.

if i can run windows without antivirus software and never fall foul of one simply because i've a little knowledge about how they work then so can everyone else, virus infection rates would drop to the floor...but then who would norton have to scare into buying their multimillion dollar generating products if that happened?

I've been using it for years and enjoyed it.

You may be having a mother board, or power supply problem. It shouldn't just shut down. Take it to a reliable tech to have it checked. Don't trust free soft ware to tell you.

Open your case and clean out the dust in your PC. Get a can of compressed CO2 (Radio Shack, Walmart, electronics) to knock it loose, especially from the fans.
Is it shutting down, or is it rebooting on you by itself? It may be a video card related hardeware issue. Or a driver issue. If it is rebooting, turn off auto-restart, that way you will a get a bluescreen with an error code. That will help to pinpoint the trouble. If it is shutting off, it may be a temperature issue, probably from the video card, or the main cpu if on board graphics. Speedfan is a good, free, program to monitor the cpu and mobo temps. If you think it is a virus issue, try Combofix. It not only kills viruses, but repairs damage caused by them as well, like rebuilding registry, etc.

There's a very good chance this "alert" is phony and is being produced by adware already on your machine trying to scare you into buying protection from them.

Download AdAware and Spybot, run their updates to get the latest definitions, and run them about once a week.

Hello Dawn. First thing you should do is go to www.microsoft.com and get their Malicious Tool Remover. Then download Spyware Terminator and AVG's lastest antivirus. After you've downloaded them all, run the tool and should it find something it'll alert you! After the tool has cleaned things up potentially, put the other two apps on your desktop and get the updates... and run a scan with both. These will knock out the bad stuff on your system and tell you what's there. I keep thinking also maybe you've got Window's Messenger on, and if so you need to disable it. Google it to see how to fix it and don't let it on your system. This should get you in good shape.

Id recommend using AVG free edition, found at free.grisoft.com. You can also get free anti-spyware from them as well, but id also heavily recommend you alter browsing and download habits. I cant remember the last time ive gotten a virus on my machine, and im online alot. Exercising a little common sense can save a lot of trouble.

As for AVG, its free, and you can set it up to do nightly scans at say, 3 am, when you arent using the machine. If you are going to be getting viruses frequently, might as well scan for them every night...

I worked for years in the computer industry and it was hard enough to make the programmes do what was expected every time! It takes a lot of resources to really test software but it is probably impossible to consider every likely eventuality. Most viruses operate by pretending to be something else and people will go on inventing them to prove they are clever.

Vigilance, updating your firewall and virus checkers, changing passwords regularly all helps but there is no immunity possible.

When I say deadly viruses I mean like diseases that can wipe out generations. Like aids or a sickly disease that has no cure until a cure can be found. True, many people get these diseases through rape, bad transfusions and etc. But, for those people who care not who they infect put those people who do in a bad place. unfortunately, at least with the diseases you mentioned, this is no longer possible. There are millions and millions of people with aids. what are you going to do with them all??? Trying to quarantine them would only make people with aids go into hiding and stop seeking medical treatment. With no people to administer medicine to, how will we ever find a cure.

however, with truly deadly, highly contagious diseases, such as rare strains of TB, ebola, avarian flu (if it ever mutates) etc.etc.etc., where the only possible precautionary measure is staying away from people, they should absolutely be quarantined. Given fair treatment and allowed to live as normally as possible, but never the less, quarantined.

Aids can be prevented by not having sex or checking blood for aids, and choosing not to have children when you have HIV or AIDS. With other diseases, there are no precautionary measures yet.

Since you are planning on getting a new computer you might want to do what I had a friend do who never kept their antivirus-antispyware updated. Get whatever computer will work best for what you do OFF the internet. Then use your Dell Recovery CD and wipe the drive and reinstall windows and surf the net on it. Get a virus - then format and recover as you aren't keeping files on it.

Nokia 6131 isn't running the Symbian OS - that's why you can't find any anti-virus programs for it. There are no known *viruses* that spread as *.jar or *.jad files.

In fact, viruses can't spread in *.jad files, because these are just small text files, describing the contents of the corresponding *.jar file. First of all, don't believe these idiots who's only remedy is to reformat!

Slow start up can be caused by many things. If your anti-virus software is set to scan on boot up, it will slow considerably. Mine is set that way and although the slow start up is annoying, I haven't had a virus in 4 years and I'm on the Internet every day.

It would be a good idea to defragement your drive and run the system file checker to replace any missing or corrupted system files.

As soon as the desktop appears, start the task manager (right click on the start bar) and watch which processes are using the most CPU percentage.

Most anti-virus software is configured to check and download updates every time the system boots. I have McAfee and updates download and install at least 3 times a week.

There are many other possibilities but checking the processes is the first step in finding out what is slowing things down. If your inclined and interested, go to Microsofts' web site and download AUTORUNS. It is the best utilty for identifying and controlling start up programs.

Layered protection is the most secure; you use several different programs from different companies rather then a suite (eg Norton or MacAffee); this is because each company uses its own engine for its software. Once a hacker has cracked the engine they are through all your security.

You need to have different software programs to deal with different types of malware. Anti virus programs won't deal with trojans or spy ware.

But bottom line is, it doesn't matter how many security programs you run if you bypass them and download a virus straight to your hard drive.

Never access the internet from the administrators account, use a limited account. You can't install software from a ltd account so you download to the desktop, Right click on the file and scan it with your anti virus, your anti trojan and your anti adware and spyware.

If it comes up clean you drop it into the My Docs folder, which you can access from the administrators account.

It depends. There are different types of formatting. Some will completely erase everything on the disk - even the information in the boot sector where some viruses can be found. There are other "short cut" formatting options which may not totally erase everything.

If you indeed want to start from a totally blank disk, then you should delete the main partition which should be an option at the beginning of the reinstall of the operating system. Then tell the system to create a new partition and perform a total format of the partition upon which the operating system will be installed. And make sure you reinstall the operating system from the original CD and not from a backup since a virus might be in the backup copy.

Firefox is a web browser. As for your viruses Reinstall both Norton and Spyroot, both very good programs, and run them. then turn on popup blocker. If all else fails reformat your drive.

I would go to www.bitdefender.com and try out BitDefender Total Security 2008! You will see that it will take care of most of your problems. Firefox is not a torjan remover or anything of the sort... its a web browser that is 100x better than Internet Explorer. Download firefox as well and start using that as your browser. Doing all that should do the trick but if you still have the virus/torjan then you probably end up formating or tracking down the virus and removing it your self.

Burning CD's is the same as copying files to a floppy disk. The only difference being that the CD will hold so much more than a floppy disk (5 1/4 or 3.5).

Most likely cause of atypical pap is precancerous cells due to HPV. But, as was said by others, there are many causes of weird cells. They want to make sure you're not headed for cervical cancer. You can look it up on line. I keyed in your spelling of the word and it came up also with another spelling colposcopy. Both seem to say about the same thing. Cervical exam usually for small bumpy cauliflower looking warts that are usually painless that are around the genitals.

AIM itself won't give you viruses. I would recommend using another Instant Messaging Client though. Trillian is an example of one, or GAIM. Which ever client you choose, make sure to set your privacy settings to some what restrictive levels. Viruses are most likely to come to you in messages from someone you don't know. In 6 years we are yet to see a virus take OS X out en masse.

It is not the obscurity factor. for even symbian for mobile phones has a lesser market share and more viruses than OS X. This doesn't mean there won't ever be viruses for the Mac system, but so far it has proved to hard to do when there are are far easier targets out there (namely windows).

Perhaps the question that should be asked is why so many people choose to use a system with so many built in security flaws like windows when the alternative is so obviously more secure. More importantly, why does Microsoft insist in repeating the same mistakes over and over again to the detriment of its user base?

With personal experience, and from talking to friends I have found that no free music downloader program like Limewire is completely safe. If you want to sacrifice a mere $0.99 for a song you can enjoy for years and give the artist what he/she deserves then I would go with iTunes. I use it (I buy the pre-paid cards; no need for a credit card) and it works great! You can burn the music onto the CD and play it in the car, or put it onto your iPod etc. Buying songs through iTunes is cheaper than buying it at a store.

If you are going to use Limewire or another free program, make sure to SCAN the file before opening it with a good antivirus and/or antispyware program. In addition, if the size of the music file is like 400KB, you know it's a virus because the average song is around 2-4MBs.

If you have the Antiverims thing, do a seach for SMITFRAUDFIX in google and download the fix. You will have to reboot into safe mode to run the fix. Otherwise here are some good resources.

If the pop ups appear when you're online, activate your browsers pop up blocker. Go to tools - internet options - block pop ups.

But if they appear on your pc when you're not connected to the net then you have either spyware or adware on your pc. Run Spybot S%26D and Ad-Aware SE Personal to get rid of them.

First the time problem is probably your battery. It shuld be replaced every 2 years.(it is on the motherboard, about the size o a quarter). cats don't get the pukey flu, diarrhea and vomiting are definite signs of somethings just not right. Is she up to date on her shots? Did she get outside after you sprayed the yard? The most important thing you can do for her is call an animal hospital now and tell them exactly what is happening. I lost my Persian in March to cancer and she had the same symptoms your cat is having. Is there any blood in her stools? Please check for that. If so, it's really bad. A good computer shop will be able to clear the virus without formatting the hard drive. take it to a local shop , PC-Ideas are good and they are cheap.

In my experience the only totally effective solution to your problem is to replace the PC's hard drive (not very expensive these days) and reload your software. Also, an investment in anti-virus software would be useful.
It is not at all difficult if you have windows cd and cds of all the other softwares you are using on your computer. However there are other ways also.

If you run a repair install, all programs on your computer will remain intact and the windows will be repaired. Again you will need the windows installation cd/dvd for that.
