No, if you are downloading it from the official site then it is virus free. Windows just does that will all sites that attempt to download files as it can be dangerous. Always keep an up to date virus scanner on when you are browsing the internet just to be sure.

My computer had a bunch of viruses (spyware, trojans, etc). It was hardly running and my toolbar kept getting a popup from Microsoft that said "Your computer has been infected with spyware". Well, I managed to get the viruses deleted from my computer and now it is running again. Everything is fine except it won't let me go on the internet now. (I'm on another computer right now, same Main router)

I connect to the internet (wireless DSL) and it says its running 11 Mbps and Excellent connection (which is the best it can say). Yet, no websites will display. And I can't update my anitvirus programs through the internet.

hmm go into your router settings, and configure there, make sure both computers have the same network name and also are on a different Ip address. They have to have a web key of some sort if you had it configured like that in order to work properly. Make sure there are no firewalls or virus programs running at first when you connect to the internet, The firewall has to be giving permission to the internet source.

The reason you don't hear about Mac viruses is because there are so few Mac users out there, especially in business applications, that is just doesn't effect enough people for it to be big news.

It has to do with the operating system. Most will write viruses for the masses (Microsoft operating systems) rather than Mac's OS (unix based). If you wrote software would you rather have a market of 90% or less than 10%?
There definitely is a relation. Viruses are basically malicious pieces of software. Since most of the world is using windows environment PC based system. And I know there is always the what is better argument. But most of the software is being developed for Windows based PC. I think that is mainly because Windows pretty much rules most of the business applications. As so most of the software developers are concentrating on PCs and windows. I'm not sure if it's illegal, or if it's what you download that's illegal. But it does have viruses. The first time I downloaded limewire, it automatically downloaded a worm onto my PC called Alcra-B or something. Basically it makes Limewire stay open FOREVER in order to spread itself to other computers. If you close it, it re-opens, and if you uninstall limewire, the can't find file window opens like every 5 seconds. Took me hours to fix.

Scan it before you open it. And if you know these people send you viruses,just don't open it.E-mails that I don't recognize the sender i simply don't open .I delete them. To get rid of them you have to run your anti-virus program, quarantine them and then delete them.

in the descrition of your problrm, I don't think its a virus, its a system error, the rpc is remote procedure call which controls the ipconfig and connections along with a couple of other system critical services, if you are getting this error that is why your antivirus cannot update, it doesn't really explain the search problem but it is indicative of a system problem....running system restore may fix it, but you would be better off doing a repair install, this will not change your programs or files but will reinstall the operating system, or at least rewrite the files and could be a solution to your problem. Of course the simplest and more time consuming fix is to do a clean install (format the drive and start over from scratch) but if you try system restore first and that doesn't fix it, then try a repair install, if that doean't fix it then you will have to do a complete reinstall as whatever caused the error in the first place isn't going to get resolved any other way.

Would be nice if it was that simple. Install an anti virus and you are safe, yes that would really be nice.

Unfortunately it doesn't quite work that way. For some odd reason all those virus writers out there like to screw over peoples machines any way they can. I'll never understand why.

Keep your machine up to date, operating system, antivirus, firewall any and all software. Microsoft is constantly patching holes in the Windows system and its Office software. So it is a good idea to keep up to date.

A good firewall is another way to protect your machine. Alas even those must be kept up to date and on. You'd be surprised how many people install firewalls and then turn them off because they didn't understand what the things were doing.

Spyware scanners have become necessary because of the many idiots putting either extra little programs into software downloads or putting bugs right into their web pages.

To answer your question, NO just putting an antivirus on the computer doesn't make it safe.

Choose "Safe mode with network".

Yes as the answerer above me stated Safe Mode is ideal to run your scans. Safe mode runs only the bare minimum programs essential to start and run windows. I personally do not recommend turning off System Restore. I have had great success with the scanning for adware/scumware on my machine and when using the "Custom" scanning it scans the backups and archives and has found problems in them and cleared them out.

Case in point---%26gt; Some scumware writer found a new way to get past the scanning engines of all I had tried. I personally use Ad Aware to great success. Well Ad Aware could not get rid of this malware. Everytime I turned my machine on there it was ... My new wallpaper was a big web page! I ran in normal mode, safe mode to no avail. I then downloaded all the spyware scanners that are recommended on here and all to no avail. I finally went into system restore and restored it to a couple days before my infestation. SUCCESS!!! Life was good. I went through my computer and found some remnants of the cursed scumware. After a couple weeks of running my scanner it finally recognized the scumware that was leftover and deleted it.

well thats semi true BUT ma are built on top of a secure OS to begin with while windows is not, so while you are correct that a bigger "target" would attract more virus writers a lot of them are "script kiddies"who don't truely know virus writing.

So there would be a huge learning curve as the mac OS is based on unix

it's hard to tell because Mac's have government level security on them. I would say they'd definitely be more of a target. and it IS what OS you have....PC's have lots of loopholes in their security...Macs are built better, cost more in return.

Its not the client itself that gives you the virus, its the content you download. Using limewire is legal, but downloading isnt. The key to downloading is after you downloaded everything is make sure you close limewire, and clean out your shared folder. Also make sure you know what you are downloading, then you will be safe from viruses. I recommend only downloading music from limewire.

I have not heard this. It is also completely illogical. MySpace is a secure site and has enough advertising that they do not need to place viruses. Also, the only things that can be uploaded onto MySpace that are virus prone are music files. So it's really your preference in which files you believe are credible and safe. Lastly, it may be safer not to follow links from pictures, because you do not know where the links originate or if the link is connecting you to a secure site.

Well, I will admit it is not the greatest, especially with the speed, but KCeasy isn't bad. It hasn't given me any viruses that I know of. This is a good program for me, but with any file sharing program, you just have to know which one to download. If the file says it is only a few kilobytes, and it is a song or a movie, DO NOT download it. This could be a virus. Also, to protect your computer, you can download or buy an antivirus, such as AVG or Norton, and I think you can get these antivirus programs specifically for protecting you from viruses caused by file sharing programs. I am sorry, but I do not know of any file sharing antiviruses. Try looking it up. I hope this helps.

Your daughter would benefit more from a regular HEPA air purifier. The Sharper Image ones are better than none at all, but they do not do the job that a normal air purifier does. There is no substitute for one as you are finding out. It does not take dust, pollen, danders out of the air like a HEPA does. I use Limewire and I have never got a virus from it. I think the only thing you should be careful of when using Limewire is downloading .exe programs (and the like). If you really don't want to use it, then try sites like Altavista (audio search) or Singingfish.

It's been several years since a virus has been written for a Mac. Comparing the amount of viruses written for Macs and for PCs is like comparing a puddle to the Pacific Ocean.

Macs are much less prone to crash than PCs. Macs have filesystem that is not affected by fragmentation, and the user interface is much cleaner and easier to use.

Open your case and clean out the dust in your PC. Get a can of compressed CO2 (Radio Shack, Walmart, electronics) to knock it loose, especially from the fans.
Is it shutting down, or is it rebooting on you by itself? It may be a video card related hardeware issue. Or a driver issue. If it is rebooting, turn off auto-restart, that way you will a get a bluescreen with an error code. That will help to pinpoint the trouble. If it is shutting off, it may be a temperature issue, probably from the video card, or the main cpu if on board graphics. Speedfan is a good, free, program to monitor the cpu and mobo temps. If you think it is a virus issue, try Combofix. It not only kills viruses, but repairs damage caused by them as well, like rebuilding registry, etc.

There's a very good chance this "alert" is phony and is being produced by adware already on your machine trying to scare you into buying protection from them.

Hello Dawn. First thing you should do is go to www.microsoft.com and get their Malicious Tool Remover. Then download Spyware Terminator and AVG's lastest antivirus. After you've downloaded them all, run the tool and should it find something it'll alert you! After the tool has cleaned things up potentially, put the other two apps on your desktop and get the updates... and run a scan with both. These will knock out the bad stuff on your system and tell you what's there. I keep thinking also maybe you've got Window's Messenger on, and if so you need to disable it. Google it to see how to fix it and don't let it on your system. This should get you in good shape.
Suggest you check the Security, Privacy and Content tabs in Tools, Internet Options.

Id recommend using AVG free edition, found at free.grisoft.com. You can also get free anti-spyware from them as well, but id also heavily recommend you alter browsing and download habits. I cant remember the last time ive gotten a virus on my machine, and im online alot. Exercising a little common sense can save a lot of trouble.

As for AVG, its free, and you can set it up to do nightly scans at say, 3 am, when you arent using the machine. If you are going to be getting viruses frequently, might as well scan for them every night...

I worked for years in the computer industry and it was hard enough to make the programmes do what was expected every time! It takes a lot of resources to really test software but it is probably impossible to consider every likely eventuality. Most viruses operate by pretending to be something else and people will go on inventing them to prove they are clever.

Vigilance, updating your firewall and virus checkers, changing passwords regularly all helps but there is no immunity possible.

When I say deadly viruses I mean like diseases that can wipe out generations. Like aids or a sickly disease that has no cure until a cure can be found. unfortunately, at least with the diseases you mentioned, this is no longer possible. There are millions and millions of people with aids. what are you going to do with them all??? Trying to quarantine them would only make people with aids go into hiding and stop seeking medical treatment. With no people to administer medicine to, how will we ever find a cure.

however, with truly deadly, highly contagious diseases, such as rare strains of TB, ebola, avarian flu (if it ever mutates) etc.etc.etc., where the only possible precautionary measure is staying away from people, they should absolutely be quarantined. Since you are planning on getting a new computer you might want to do what I had a friend do who never kept their antivirus-antispyware updated. Get whatever computer will work best for what you do OFF the internet. Then use your Dell Recovery CD and wipe the drive and reinstall windows and surf the net on it. Get a virus - then format and recover as you aren't keeping files on it.
